Prop firm daily drawdown explained: balance vs equity, reset time and MT5 tracking
Daily drawdown is the rule that ends more prop firm challenges than any strategy flaw. It is simple on paper, but the details differ between firms, and misreading them is expensive.
What a daily drawdown limit actually measures
A daily drawdown limit caps how much your account may lose within one trading day. The exact definition varies, so check the firm’s current rules for three things:
- Reference value: the starting balance, the previous day’s balance, or the previous day’s equity.
- Basis: whether floating (unrealised) losses count. Many firms measure equity, so an open losing trade counts before you close it.
- Reset time: the daily reset is often tied to a specific server or time zone, not midnight where you live.
Balance vs equity: the common trap
If the limit is equity-based, a trade that is down 3% is already using 3% of your allowance, even if it later recovers. Traders who watch only closed P/L can breach a limit without ever closing a losing trade.
Static vs trailing total drawdown
Total (overall) drawdown may be measured from the initial balance, or trail your highest balance or equity. A trailing rule shrinks your cushion as the account grows, so the number to watch changes over time.
How to track headroom in MT5
- Write down your firm’s rule: reference, basis, reset time, limits.
- Set a personal buffer well inside the official limit.
- Check headroom before every new trade, not at the end of the day.
- Include open positions and their stop-loss distance in the calculation.
Prop Firm Risk Manager PRO EA shows daily and total drawdown headroom on an MT5 dashboard, supports firm-style presets you can adjust, and can alert, block new orders or close positions at levels you choose. Verify settings against your own account first and test on a demo.
